Radon Test Kit or Professional Radon Test?

A charcoal test kit, whether free or store-bought, is mailed to a lab and gives you one average number for the days it sat in your home. A professional test uses a continuous electronic monitor that records radon every hour, along with temperature, pressure and humidity, and you review the results with a certified professional the day the monitor is picked up.

If you already used a kit and it read 4.0 pCi/L or higher, or between 2 and 4, a professional test is the right next step before deciding on mitigation.

Accurate Results Start with Professional Equipment

Not all radon tests are created equal. We use professional continuous electronic radon monitors that measure your home's radon levels hour by hour throughout the testing period. Unlike inexpensive DIY kits, our equipment detects environmental changes, records every reading automatically, and provides reliable results you can confidently use when making decisions about your home.

We handle everything from the initial calibration and placement to the final retrieval and detailed consultation, guiding you through the results so you know exactly what steps to take next.

How Much Does a Radon Test Cost in Utah?

A professional radon test in Utah typically costs $150 to $300. If your result is high and you move forward with mitigation within a reasonable timeframe, 50% of the testing cost is commonly credited toward your system.

If mitigation is needed, we provide a free on-site estimate for a system designed for your home.

When to Test for Radon in Utah

Winter is the most important time to test. Homes stay closed, the furnace runs and families spend more time indoors, so radon levels can run higher than in summer. A summer test is not a winter number.

Short tests of two or three days were designed for real estate deadlines. For the most reliable picture, test in winter with a short-term professional test, or run a long-term test of 90 days or more.

Test again if:

• You have never tested, or your last test was in summer or more than two years ago

• You bought a home, finished a basement or made major renovations

• You have a radon system and have not checked your number since it was installed

Radon Testing Questions

Is a free or store-bought radon test kit enough?

A test kit is a good starting point, but it gives you a single average for the days it sat in your home. If a kit reads 4.0 pCi/L or higher, or between 2 and 4, confirm it with a professional test before you decide on mitigation. A professional continuous monitor records your radon level every hour and comes with a review of the results.

When is the best time to test for radon in Utah?

Winter. Homes stay closed, the furnace runs and families spend more time inside, so radon levels can run higher than in summer. A summer test is not a winter number. For the most reliable picture, test in winter with a short-term professional test, or run a long-term test of 90 days or more.

What should I do if my radon test result is high?

At 4.0 pCi/L or higher, the EPA recommends fixing your home. Schedule a free on-site estimate so a system can be designed for your foundation. Between 2 and 4, consider fixing it, or at least test again in winter. Below 2 is a good number, but retest if your last test was in summer or more than two years ago. See how a radon mitigation system brings the level down.

What does a continuous radon monitor show that a kit does not?

A charcoal kit is mailed to a lab and reports one number for the whole test period. A continuous electronic monitor records radon hour by hour, along with temperature, barometric pressure and humidity, so you can see how your level changed during the test, not just the average. Results are reviewed with you the day the monitor is picked up.

Radon Testing for Home Buyers and Sellers

Buying or selling a home in Utah? A professional radon test gives everyone in the transaction a number they can trust, and results are reviewed the day the monitor is picked up. If the level is high, we can provide an estimate for a mitigation system so you can plan before closing.
